First a little background on Herbivore skincare…

Herbivore Botanicals was created in 2011 when Seattle based couple Julia Wills (with a degree in Naturopathy from Bastyr University) and Alexander Kummerow were looking for organic products that would help heal Alex’s Eczema.

They started selling their products on Etsy and not too long after they gained great popularity. You’ve probably noticed them available in some of your favorite stores like Anthropologie.

Their goal is to provide products that are both highly effective, and non-toxic. They believe in tangible results and the “power of nature”. And are very transparent with their sourcing.

The following ingredient information for the Herbivore Coconut Body Oil was found on their website, take a look…

Natural ingredients, plant-based food-grade cold-pressed oils, steam distilled therapeutic-grade essential oils, GMO-free soy wax, recyclable and reusable packaging, many certified organic ingredients.

Created without:

Synthetic ingredients, parabens, sodium laurel sulfate, phthalates, chemicals, fillers, animal testing, mineral oils, petroleum.

EWG Rating:

This pure coconut body oil has an EWG of 2. I’m guessing it’s not a 1, only because the jasmine added may cause allergies for some – fair enough.

Why you should consider purchasing Herbivore body oil

I was looking for something to help my dry skin and knew coconut oil had given others hope. Plus I’ll admit – I couldn’t be more obsessed with this packaging, it’s gorgeous!

They claim it combats dry, dull skin with concentrated and long-lasting oils. Also that it will give your skin a radiant glow.

I found that this body oil made with coconut is gentle enough to use on my face while I have rashes. It does smell like coconut, but it’s not overpowering. It took me a few days of using it to really fall in love.

I think I was skeptical because I knew nothing about the brand and what was in the product. I also tested it out when I was having a rash outbreak – not always the best idea. Hah. Even though I was nervous about it but I was pleasantly surprised in the end.

How I like to use Herbivore coconut body oil:

For the face:

Apply 2-3 pumps of oil to freshly washed and dried skin. Massage until absorbed. You can add moisturizer on top, though you don’t really need to. After a few minutes you can safely apply your makeup as usual.

For the body:

Apply as needed – also to freshly washed and dried skin, the amount of pumps depends on where you’re using it. Massage until absorbed.

It’s important to note that if using this product during the day, you absolutely need to wear sunscreen. Coconut oil can act as a tanning agent and without protection you may end up with sunburn and skin damage.

Is Herbivore the best coconut oil for skin?

In a word – maybe. What I mean by that is, it depends on where I’m using the coconut oil. If on my face, this is the one. But for the rest of my body, this works really well, but it is a bit pricier than other brands that suit my needs. Which is usually simple moisturization on my legs and arms.

I would definitely purchase this product again. After the success I’ve had using it on my facial rashes, I’m excited to check out more of their products and see what the brand is all about.
